Ali Camp (5010m) - 20 Juin 2004

Pour se rendre à Ali Camp, il faut traverser un long champ de neige crevassé. Pour éviter de caler jusqu'aux cuisses, on doit partir avant le lever du soleil. Comme il neigeait, nous sommes partis en retard… on a donc calé jusqu'au genoux tout le long!

Ali Camp est petit et malpropre. Des déchets partout et des excréments à chaque pas. C'est pas sain ici… Il va neiger toute l'après-midi, ce qui va nous forcer à rester dans la tente. Une bonne chose, c'est trop moche ici de toute façon.

To get to Ali Camp, you must traverse a long crevassed snowfield. In order to not dig ourselves to the waist, we had to start before sunrise. Since it snowed when we woke up, we lefty late. We did sink to waist knee level all the way!

Ali Camp is small and dirty. Trash and human waste everywhere. It's not healthy here… It snowed most of the afternoon, so it forced us to stay in the tent. Good think since all is to disgusting anyway…

Gondogoro La (5640m) - 21 Juin 2004

Voilà le grand jour, nous devons traverser le col du Gandogoro ce matin. Les conditions sont mauvaises. Il neige tout le temps. On y voit rien. Pas grave, on y va tout de même. C'est particulièrement difficile par ce que nous nous enfonçons dans la neige constamment. Stéphanie peine aussi à cause de l'altitude. De plus, je crains les avalanches, même si on me dit que tout est sans danger. J'en crois pas un mot, alors je force le pas et pousse Stéphanie… On arrive finalement au somment dans un " white out " complet. Au moins nous sommes passé! Nous serons d'ailleurs les seuls à passer en plus d'un mois. Tout le monde ayant fait demi-tours dus aux conditions.

Here,s the big day. We need to cross the Gandogoro la this morning. The conditions are really bad; it's snowing all the time. We see nothing. Nevertheless we decide to go. It's very hard moving forward as we sink deep in the snow all the time. Stephanie also has some trouble coping with the altitude. I'm also very scared of the avalanches even if our guides tell us otherwise. I don't believe one word so I accelerate and try to push Stephanie to go faster. We finally reach the to of the pass in a total whiteout condition. At least we're passed. Actually, we'll be the only team to cross in a long time. 3 more team have turned around two day before due to the weather.

Xhuspang (4755m) - 21 Juin 2004

C'est à Xhuspang dans la vallée de Hushe que nous passerons la nuit. Les gens ici sont très accueillants. Certainement due au tourisme plus faible de la région. La vallée semble magnifique. Plus propre et moins achalandé que le celle du Baltoro. Mon seul désarrois, ne pas voir le sommet de Laila Peak…

It's at Xhuspang in the Hushe valley that we'll pass the nigh. People here are really friendly; most probably due to the smaller amount of tourism in the region. The vally looks wonderful. More clean and less traveled then the Baltoro. My only disappointment is not seeing Laila peak…

Shaisho (3555m) - 22 Juin 2004

Longue mais facile journée ou nous avons parcouru plus de 15 km avec un dénivelé descendant de 1200m. La vallée est verdoyante et les paysages saisissant. Le camp de Shaisho comprend une petite " shop " avec une jolie terrasse. C'est bien aménagé et chaleureux. J'ai rencontré un couple d'Italien venu grimper dans le coin et un petit monsieur Pakistanais, l'air de rien. Eh bien, le petit monsieur en question a fait Broad Peak 3 ou 4 fois et de même pour le Gasherbrum II. Il a même travaillé au film K2 ce qui l'a mené a Toronto et Vancouver. Dans le registre, j'ai aussi vu que Steve House était au K7 pour s'entraîner en fonction du Nanga Parbat.

Long but easy day where we travelled more then 15km with more then 1200m of vertical descent. The valley is lush and the views are again superb. Shaisho camp has a small shop with a nice terrace. We've met an Italian couple who came in the area to climb. We also met a small Pakistani man who was very friendly. Well, the little man climbed Broad Peak 3 or 4 times and the same for Gasherbrum II. He also worked on the movie K2 and it brought him to Toronto and Vancouver. In the registering book, I saw that Steve House was at K7 to train for it's Nanga Parbat bid.

Hushe (3300m) - 23 Juin 2004

C'est ici que tire à sa fin notre périple dans les montagnes. Hushe est un petit village un peu comme Askole, mais en plus développer. De l'aide internationale ayant aidé le village, il semble y avoir une éducation plus adéquate des enfants. Mais ils sont un peu achalant ces enfants, nous demandant tous des bonbons ou encore des stylos pour l'école. A moins d'avoir de quoi donner à tout le village, il faut éviter d'encourager ce comportement malsain. Si vous aller donner des biens, faites le aux écoles, qui eux redistribueront au besoin.

Nous avons également beaucoup discuté avec un médecin espagnol venu faire du bénévolat dans le village. Une job ingrate et pas facile croyez moi. Depuis sont arrivé, 4 bébés sont nées et 3 sont morts à la naissance. Imaginez comment doit se sentir ce pédiatre dépourvu de tout moyen dans ce village moyen-âgeux…

Our journey in the mountains stops here. Hushe is a small village that reminds me of Askole but in a bit more developed. International aid having helped the village, children seem to have some education. The kids are a bit of a pest for tourists, always asking for candy or pencils for school. Unless you have enough for the whole village, it's not a good idea to give anything. If you plan on giving, give to the school directly so they can distribute to the real needing kids.

We also talked with a Spanish doctor who's volunteering work to the village. A hard job, believe me. Since his arrival, 4 babies where born and 3 died at birth. Imagine how hard this is for pediatric without any resources in this medieval village…
